How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 29 ÷ 100 = 0.29
  2. Multiply: 0.29 × 12 = 3.48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.48 ÷ 12 × 100 = 29%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 29/100 = part/12, so part = 29 × 12 ÷ 100 = 3.48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =29%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.48 is the 29% share of 12. The remaining 71% is 8.52, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 29% off an item priced $12 saves $3.48, so you pay $8.52.

Adding and taking away 29%

Increasing 12 by 29% gives 15.48 and decreasing it by 29% gives 8.52. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 29% and then lowering the result by 29% ends at 10.9908, because the second 29% is taken of a bigger number.
