How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 29 ÷ 100 = 0.29
- Multiply: 0.29 × 13 = 3.77
- Check: Work backwards: 3.77 ÷ 13 × 100 = 29%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 29/100 = part/13, so part = 29 × 13 ÷ 100 = 3.77. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =29%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.77 is the 29% share of 13. The remaining 71% is 9.23, and the two parts add back up to 13.
Discounts: 29% off an item priced $13 saves $3.77, so you pay $9.23.
Adding and taking away 29%
Increasing 13 by 29% gives 16.77 and decreasing it by 29% gives 9.23. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 29% and then lowering the result by 29% ends at 11.9067, because the second 29% is taken of a bigger number.
