How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 13 = 0.39
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.39 ÷ 13 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/13, so part = 3 × 13 ÷ 100 = 0.39. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.39 is the 3% share of 13. The remaining 97% is 12.61, and the two parts add back up to 13.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $13 saves $0.39, so you pay $12.61.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 13 by 3% gives 13.39 and decreasing it by 3% gives 12.61. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 12.9883, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
