How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
- Multiply: 0.13 × 3 = 0.39
- Check: Work backwards: 0.39 ÷ 3 × 100 = 13%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/3, so part = 13 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.39. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =13%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.39 is the 13% share of 3. The remaining 87% is 2.61, and the two parts add back up to 3.
Discounts: 13% off an item priced $3 saves $0.39, so you pay $2.61.
Adding and taking away 13%
Increasing 3 by 13% gives 3.39 and decreasing it by 13% gives 2.61. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 2.9493, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
