How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 3 = 0.09
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.09 ÷ 3 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/3, so part = 3 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.09. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.09 is the 3% share of 3. The remaining 97% is 2.91, and the two parts add back up to 3.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $3 saves $0.09, so you pay $2.91.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 3 by 3% gives 3.09 and decreasing it by 3% gives 2.91. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 2.9973, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 3% of 3. 3% of 3 and 3% of 3 are always equal (both are 3 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.09), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
