How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 67 = 2.01
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.01 ÷ 67 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/67, so part = 3 × 67 ÷ 100 = 2.01. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*67. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.01 is the 3% share of 67. The remaining 97% is 64.99, and the two parts add back up to 67.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $67 saves $2.01, so you pay $64.99.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 67 by 3% gives 69.01 and decreasing it by 3% gives 64.99. These do not cancel out: raising 67 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 66.9397, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
