How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 7 = 0.21
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.21 ÷ 7 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/7, so part = 3 × 7 ÷ 100 = 0.21. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*7. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.21 is the 3% share of 7. The remaining 97% is 6.79, and the two parts add back up to 7.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $7 saves $0.21, so you pay $6.79.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 7 by 3% gives 7.21 and decreasing it by 3% gives 6.79. These do not cancel out: raising 7 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 6.9937, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
