How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 3 = 0.21
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.21 ÷ 3 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/3, so part = 7 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.21. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.21 is the 7% share of 3. The remaining 93% is 2.79, and the two parts add back up to 3.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $3 saves $0.21, so you pay $2.79.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 3 by 7% gives 3.21 and decreasing it by 7% gives 2.79. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 2.9853, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 3% of 7. 7% of 3 and 3% of 7 are always equal (both are 7 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.21), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
