How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 83 = 2.49
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.49 ÷ 83 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/83, so part = 3 × 83 ÷ 100 = 2.49. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*83. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.49 is the 3% share of 83. The remaining 97% is 80.51, and the two parts add back up to 83.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $83 saves $2.49, so you pay $80.51.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 83 by 3% gives 85.49 and decreasing it by 3% gives 80.51. These do not cancel out: raising 83 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 82.9253, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
