How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
- Multiply: 0.03 × 96 = 2.88
- Check: Work backwards: 2.88 ÷ 96 × 100 = 3%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/96, so part = 3 × 96 ÷ 100 = 2.88. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =3%*96. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.88 is the 3% share of 96. The remaining 97% is 93.12, and the two parts add back up to 96.
Discounts: 3% off an item priced $96 saves $2.88, so you pay $93.12.
Adding and taking away 3%
Increasing 96 by 3% gives 98.88 and decreasing it by 3% gives 93.12. These do not cancel out: raising 96 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 95.9136, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
