How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
  2. Multiply: 0.3 × 16 = 4.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.8 ÷ 16 × 100 = 30%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 30/100 = part/16, so part = 30 × 16 ÷ 100 = 4.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =30%*16. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.8 is the 30% share of 16. The remaining 70% is 11.2, and the two parts add back up to 16.

Discounts: 30% off an item priced $16 saves $4.8, so you pay $11.2.

Adding and taking away 30%

Increasing 16 by 30% gives 20.8 and decreasing it by 30% gives 11.2. These do not cancel out: raising 16 by 30% and then lowering the result by 30% ends at 14.56, because the second 30% is taken of a bigger number.
