How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
- Multiply: 0.16 × 30 = 4.8
- Check: Work backwards: 4.8 ÷ 30 × 100 = 16%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/30, so part = 16 × 30 ÷ 100 = 4.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =16%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.8 is the 16% share of 30. The remaining 84% is 25.2, and the two parts add back up to 30.
Discounts: 16% off an item priced $30 saves $4.8, so you pay $25.2.
Adding and taking away 16%
Increasing 30 by 16% gives 34.8 and decreasing it by 16% gives 25.2. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 29.232, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 30% of 16. 16% of 30 and 30% of 16 are always equal (both are 16 × 30 ÷ 100 = 4.8), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
