How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
  2. Multiply: 0.3 × 31 = 9.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.3 ÷ 31 × 100 = 30%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 30/100 = part/31, so part = 30 × 31 ÷ 100 = 9.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =30%*31. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.3 is the 30% share of 31. The remaining 70% is 21.7, and the two parts add back up to 31.

Discounts: 30% off an item priced $31 saves $9.3, so you pay $21.7.

Adding and taking away 30%

Increasing 31 by 30% gives 40.3 and decreasing it by 30% gives 21.7. These do not cancel out: raising 31 by 30% and then lowering the result by 30% ends at 28.21, because the second 30% is taken of a bigger number.
