How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 31 ÷ 100 = 0.31
- Multiply: 0.31 × 6 = 1.86
- Check: Work backwards: 1.86 ÷ 6 × 100 = 31%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 31/100 = part/6, so part = 31 × 6 ÷ 100 = 1.86. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =31%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.86 is the 31% share of 6. The remaining 69% is 4.14, and the two parts add back up to 6.
Discounts: 31% off an item priced $6 saves $1.86, so you pay $4.14.
Adding and taking away 31%
Increasing 6 by 31% gives 7.86 and decreasing it by 31% gives 4.14. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 31% and then lowering the result by 31% ends at 5.4234, because the second 31% is taken of a bigger number.
