How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 32 ÷ 100 = 0.32
- Multiply: 0.32 × 3 = 0.96
- Check: Work backwards: 0.96 ÷ 3 × 100 = 32%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 32/100 = part/3, so part = 32 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.96. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =32%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.96 is the 32% share of 3. The remaining 68% is 2.04, and the two parts add back up to 3.
Discounts: 32% off an item priced $3 saves $0.96, so you pay $2.04.
Adding and taking away 32%
Increasing 3 by 32% gives 3.96 and decreasing it by 32% gives 2.04. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 32% and then lowering the result by 32% ends at 2.6928, because the second 32% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 3% of 32. 32% of 3 and 3% of 32 are always equal (both are 32 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.96), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
