How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
- Multiply: 0.03 × 32 = 0.96
- Check: Work backwards: 0.96 ÷ 32 × 100 = 3%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/32, so part = 3 × 32 ÷ 100 = 0.96. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =3%*32. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.96 is the 3% share of 32. The remaining 97% is 31.04, and the two parts add back up to 32.
Discounts: 3% off an item priced $32 saves $0.96, so you pay $31.04.
Adding and taking away 3%
Increasing 32 by 3% gives 32.96 and decreasing it by 3% gives 31.04. These do not cancel out: raising 32 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 31.9712, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 32% of 3. 3% of 32 and 32% of 3 are always equal (both are 3 × 32 ÷ 100 = 0.96), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
