How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
- Multiply: 0.33 × 5 = 1.65
- Check: Work backwards: 1.65 ÷ 5 × 100 = 33%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/5, so part = 33 × 5 ÷ 100 = 1.65. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =33%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.65 is the 33% share of 5. The remaining 67% is 3.35, and the two parts add back up to 5.
Discounts: 33% off an item priced $5 saves $1.65, so you pay $3.35.
Adding and taking away 33%
Increasing 5 by 33% gives 6.65 and decreasing it by 33% gives 3.35. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 4.4555, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.
