How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
  2. Multiply: 0.33 × 75 = 24.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 24.75 ÷ 75 × 100 = 33%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/75, so part = 33 × 75 ÷ 100 = 24.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =33%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

24.75 is the 33% share of 75. The remaining 67% is 50.25, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 33% off an item priced $75 saves $24.75, so you pay $50.25.

Adding and taking away 33%

Increasing 75 by 33% gives 99.75 and decreasing it by 33% gives 50.25. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 66.8325, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.
