How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 13 = 4.55
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.55 ÷ 13 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/13, so part = 35 × 13 ÷ 100 = 4.55. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.55 is the 35% share of 13. The remaining 65% is 8.45, and the two parts add back up to 13.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $13 saves $4.55, so you pay $8.45.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 13 by 35% gives 17.55 and decreasing it by 35% gives 8.45. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 11.4075, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
