How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 17 = 5.95
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.95 ÷ 17 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/17, so part = 35 × 17 ÷ 100 = 5.95. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*17. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.95 is the 35% share of 17. The remaining 65% is 11.05, and the two parts add back up to 17.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $17 saves $5.95, so you pay $11.05.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 17 by 35% gives 22.95 and decreasing it by 35% gives 11.05. These do not cancel out: raising 17 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 14.9175, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
