How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 21 = 7.35
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.35 ÷ 21 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/21, so part = 35 × 21 ÷ 100 = 7.35. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*21. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.35 is the 35% share of 21. The remaining 65% is 13.65, and the two parts add back up to 21.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $21 saves $7.35, so you pay $13.65.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 21 by 35% gives 28.35 and decreasing it by 35% gives 13.65. These do not cancel out: raising 21 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 18.4275, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
