How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 55 = 19.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 19.25 ÷ 55 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/55, so part = 35 × 55 ÷ 100 = 19.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

19.25 is the 35% share of 55. The remaining 65% is 35.75, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $55 saves $19.25, so you pay $35.75.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 55 by 35% gives 74.25 and decreasing it by 35% gives 35.75. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 48.2625, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
