How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 68 = 23.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 23.8 ÷ 68 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/68, so part = 35 × 68 ÷ 100 = 23.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*68. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

23.8 is the 35% share of 68. The remaining 65% is 44.2, and the two parts add back up to 68.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $68 saves $23.8, so you pay $44.2.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 68 by 35% gives 91.8 and decreasing it by 35% gives 44.2. These do not cancel out: raising 68 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 59.67, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
