How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 7 = 2.45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.45 ÷ 7 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/7, so part = 35 × 7 ÷ 100 = 2.45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*7. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.45 is the 35% share of 7. The remaining 65% is 4.55, and the two parts add back up to 7.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $7 saves $2.45, so you pay $4.55.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 7 by 35% gives 9.45 and decreasing it by 35% gives 4.55. These do not cancel out: raising 7 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 6.1425, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
