How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 35 = 2.45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.45 ÷ 35 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/35, so part = 7 × 35 ÷ 100 = 2.45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*35. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.45 is the 7% share of 35. The remaining 93% is 32.55, and the two parts add back up to 35.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $35 saves $2.45, so you pay $32.55.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 35 by 7% gives 37.45 and decreasing it by 7% gives 32.55. These do not cancel out: raising 35 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 34.8285, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
