How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 37 ÷ 100 = 0.37
  2. Multiply: 0.37 × 100 = 37
  3. Check: Work backwards: 37 ÷ 100 × 100 = 37%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 37/100 = part/100, so part = 37 × 100 ÷ 100 = 37. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =37%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

37 is the 37% share of 100. The remaining 63% is 63, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 37% off an item priced $100 saves $37, so you pay $63.

Adding and taking away 37%

Increasing 100 by 37% gives 137 and decreasing it by 37% gives 63. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 37% and then lowering the result by 37% ends at 86.31, because the second 37% is taken of a bigger number.
