How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 37 ÷ 100 = 0.37
  2. Multiply: 0.37 × 25 = 9.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.25 ÷ 25 × 100 = 37%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 37/100 = part/25, so part = 37 × 25 ÷ 100 = 9.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =37%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.25 is the 37% share of 25. The remaining 63% is 15.75, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 37% off an item priced $25 saves $9.25, so you pay $15.75.

Adding and taking away 37%

Increasing 25 by 37% gives 34.25 and decreasing it by 37% gives 15.75. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 37% and then lowering the result by 37% ends at 21.5775, because the second 37% is taken of a bigger number.
