How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 51 = 2.04
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.04 ÷ 51 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/51, so part = 4 × 51 ÷ 100 = 2.04. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*51. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.04 is the 4% share of 51. The remaining 96% is 48.96, and the two parts add back up to 51.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $51 saves $2.04, so you pay $48.96.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 51 by 4% gives 53.04 and decreasing it by 4% gives 48.96. These do not cancel out: raising 51 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 50.9184, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
