How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
- Multiply: 0.04 × 52 = 2.08
- Check: Work backwards: 2.08 ÷ 52 × 100 = 4%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/52, so part = 4 × 52 ÷ 100 = 2.08. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =4%*52. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.08 is the 4% share of 52. The remaining 96% is 49.92, and the two parts add back up to 52.
Discounts: 4% off an item priced $52 saves $2.08, so you pay $49.92.
Adding and taking away 4%
Increasing 52 by 4% gives 54.08 and decreasing it by 4% gives 49.92. These do not cancel out: raising 52 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 51.9168, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
