How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 58 = 2.32
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.32 ÷ 58 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/58, so part = 4 × 58 ÷ 100 = 2.32. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*58. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.32 is the 4% share of 58. The remaining 96% is 55.68, and the two parts add back up to 58.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $58 saves $2.32, so you pay $55.68.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 58 by 4% gives 60.32 and decreasing it by 4% gives 55.68. These do not cancel out: raising 58 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 57.9072, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
