How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58
  2. Multiply: 0.58 × 4 = 2.32
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.32 ÷ 4 × 100 = 58%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 58/100 = part/4, so part = 58 × 4 ÷ 100 = 2.32. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =58%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.32 is the 58% share of 4. The remaining 42% is 1.68, and the two parts add back up to 4.

Discounts: 58% off an item priced $4 saves $2.32, so you pay $1.68.

Adding and taking away 58%

Increasing 4 by 58% gives 6.32 and decreasing it by 58% gives 1.68. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 58% and then lowering the result by 58% ends at 2.6544, because the second 58% is taken of a bigger number.
