How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 51 = 20.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 20.4 ÷ 51 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/51, so part = 40 × 51 ÷ 100 = 20.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*51. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

20.4 is the 40% share of 51. The remaining 60% is 30.6, and the two parts add back up to 51.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $51 saves $20.4, so you pay $30.6.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 51 by 40% gives 71.4 and decreasing it by 40% gives 30.6. These do not cancel out: raising 51 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 42.84, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
