How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 68 = 27.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 27.2 ÷ 68 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/68, so part = 40 × 68 ÷ 100 = 27.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*68. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

27.2 is the 40% share of 68. The remaining 60% is 40.8, and the two parts add back up to 68.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $68 saves $27.2, so you pay $40.8.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 68 by 40% gives 95.2 and decreasing it by 40% gives 40.8. These do not cancel out: raising 68 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 57.12, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
