How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 9 = 3.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.6 ÷ 9 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/9, so part = 40 × 9 ÷ 100 = 3.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.6 is the 40% share of 9. The remaining 60% is 5.4, and the two parts add back up to 9.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $9 saves $3.6, so you pay $5.4.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 9 by 40% gives 12.6 and decreasing it by 40% gives 5.4. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 7.56, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 9% of 40. 40% of 9 and 9% of 40 are always equal (both are 40 × 9 ÷ 100 = 3.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
