How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 40 = 3.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.6 ÷ 40 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/40, so part = 9 × 40 ÷ 100 = 3.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.6 is the 9% share of 40. The remaining 91% is 36.4, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $40 saves $3.6, so you pay $36.4.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 40 by 9% gives 43.6 and decreasing it by 9% gives 36.4. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 39.676, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
