How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply: 0.41 × 20 = 8.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.2 ÷ 20 × 100 = 41%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/20, so part = 41 × 20 ÷ 100 = 8.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.2 is the 41% share of 20. The remaining 59% is 11.8, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 41% off an item priced $20 saves $8.2, so you pay $11.8.

Adding and taking away 41%

Increasing 20 by 41% gives 28.2 and decreasing it by 41% gives 11.8. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 16.638, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.
