How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 42 ÷ 100 = 0.42
  2. Multiply: 0.42 × 18 = 7.56
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.56 ÷ 18 × 100 = 42%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 42/100 = part/18, so part = 42 × 18 ÷ 100 = 7.56. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =42%*18. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.56 is the 42% share of 18. The remaining 58% is 10.44, and the two parts add back up to 18.

Discounts: 42% off an item priced $18 saves $7.56, so you pay $10.44.

Adding and taking away 42%

Increasing 18 by 42% gives 25.56 and decreasing it by 42% gives 10.44. These do not cancel out: raising 18 by 42% and then lowering the result by 42% ends at 14.8248, because the second 42% is taken of a bigger number.
