How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 42 ÷ 100 = 0.42
  2. Multiply: 0.42 × 50 = 21
  3. Check: Work backwards: 21 ÷ 50 × 100 = 42%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 42/100 = part/50, so part = 42 × 50 ÷ 100 = 21. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =42%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

21 is the 42% share of 50. The remaining 58% is 29, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 42% off an item priced $50 saves $21, so you pay $29.

Adding and taking away 42%

Increasing 50 by 42% gives 71 and decreasing it by 42% gives 29. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 42% and then lowering the result by 42% ends at 41.18, because the second 42% is taken of a bigger number.
