How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 42 ÷ 100 = 0.42
  2. Multiply: 0.42 × 6 = 2.52
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.52 ÷ 6 × 100 = 42%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 42/100 = part/6, so part = 42 × 6 ÷ 100 = 2.52. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =42%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.52 is the 42% share of 6. The remaining 58% is 3.48, and the two parts add back up to 6.

Discounts: 42% off an item priced $6 saves $2.52, so you pay $3.48.

Adding and taking away 42%

Increasing 6 by 42% gives 8.52 and decreasing it by 42% gives 3.48. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 42% and then lowering the result by 42% ends at 4.9416, because the second 42% is taken of a bigger number.
