How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 43 ÷ 100 = 0.43
  2. Multiply: 0.43 × 90 = 38.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 38.7 ÷ 90 × 100 = 43%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 43/100 = part/90, so part = 43 × 90 ÷ 100 = 38.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =43%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

38.7 is the 43% share of 90. The remaining 57% is 51.3, and the two parts add back up to 90.

Discounts: 43% off an item priced $90 saves $38.7, so you pay $51.3.

Adding and taking away 43%

Increasing 90 by 43% gives 128.7 and decreasing it by 43% gives 51.3. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 43% and then lowering the result by 43% ends at 73.359, because the second 43% is taken of a bigger number.
