How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 44 ÷ 100 = 0.44
- Multiply: 0.44 × 4 = 1.76
- Check: Work backwards: 1.76 ÷ 4 × 100 = 44%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 44/100 = part/4, so part = 44 × 4 ÷ 100 = 1.76. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =44%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.76 is the 44% share of 4. The remaining 56% is 2.24, and the two parts add back up to 4.
Discounts: 44% off an item priced $4 saves $1.76, so you pay $2.24.
Adding and taking away 44%
Increasing 4 by 44% gives 5.76 and decreasing it by 44% gives 2.24. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 44% and then lowering the result by 44% ends at 3.2256, because the second 44% is taken of a bigger number.
