How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 44 ÷ 100 = 0.44
  2. Multiply: 0.44 × 65 = 28.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 28.6 ÷ 65 × 100 = 44%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 44/100 = part/65, so part = 44 × 65 ÷ 100 = 28.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =44%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

28.6 is the 44% share of 65. The remaining 56% is 36.4, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 44% off an item priced $65 saves $28.6, so you pay $36.4.

Adding and taking away 44%

Increasing 65 by 44% gives 93.6 and decreasing it by 44% gives 36.4. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 44% and then lowering the result by 44% ends at 52.416, because the second 44% is taken of a bigger number.
