How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 12 = 5.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.4 ÷ 12 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/12, so part = 45 × 12 ÷ 100 = 5.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.4 is the 45% share of 12. The remaining 55% is 6.6, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $12 saves $5.4, so you pay $6.6.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 12 by 45% gives 17.4 and decreasing it by 45% gives 6.6. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 9.57, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
