How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 45 = 5.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.4 ÷ 45 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/45, so part = 12 × 45 ÷ 100 = 5.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.4 is the 12% share of 45. The remaining 88% is 39.6, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $45 saves $5.4, so you pay $39.6.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 45 by 12% gives 50.4 and decreasing it by 12% gives 39.6. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 44.352, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
