How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 25 = 11.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11.25 ÷ 25 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/25, so part = 45 × 25 ÷ 100 = 11.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11.25 is the 45% share of 25. The remaining 55% is 13.75, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $25 saves $11.25, so you pay $13.75.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 25 by 45% gives 36.25 and decreasing it by 45% gives 13.75. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 19.9375, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
