How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 98 = 44.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 44.1 ÷ 98 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/98, so part = 45 × 98 ÷ 100 = 44.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

44.1 is the 45% share of 98. The remaining 55% is 53.9, and the two parts add back up to 98.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $98 saves $44.1, so you pay $53.9.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 98 by 45% gives 142.1 and decreasing it by 45% gives 53.9. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 78.155, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
