How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 47 ÷ 100 = 0.47
  2. Multiply: 0.47 × 2 = 0.94
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.94 ÷ 2 × 100 = 47%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 47/100 = part/2, so part = 47 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.94. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =47%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.94 is the 47% share of 2. The remaining 53% is 1.06, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 47% off an item priced $2 saves $0.94, so you pay $1.06.

Adding and taking away 47%

Increasing 2 by 47% gives 2.94 and decreasing it by 47% gives 1.06. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 47% and then lowering the result by 47% ends at 1.5582, because the second 47% is taken of a bigger number.
