How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 48 ÷ 100 = 0.48
  2. Multiply: 0.48 × 100 = 48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 48 ÷ 100 × 100 = 48%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 48/100 = part/100, so part = 48 × 100 ÷ 100 = 48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =48%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

48 is the 48% share of 100. The remaining 52% is 52, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 48% off an item priced $100 saves $48, so you pay $52.

Adding and taking away 48%

Increasing 100 by 48% gives 148 and decreasing it by 48% gives 52. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 48% and then lowering the result by 48% ends at 76.96, because the second 48% is taken of a bigger number.
