How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 48 ÷ 100 = 0.48
  2. Multiply: 0.48 × 40 = 19.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 19.2 ÷ 40 × 100 = 48%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 48/100 = part/40, so part = 48 × 40 ÷ 100 = 19.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =48%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

19.2 is the 48% share of 40. The remaining 52% is 20.8, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 48% off an item priced $40 saves $19.2, so you pay $20.8.

Adding and taking away 48%

Increasing 40 by 48% gives 59.2 and decreasing it by 48% gives 20.8. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 48% and then lowering the result by 48% ends at 30.784, because the second 48% is taken of a bigger number.
