How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 49 ÷ 100 = 0.49
  2. Multiply: 0.49 × 45 = 22.05
  3. Check: Work backwards: 22.05 ÷ 45 × 100 = 49%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 49/100 = part/45, so part = 49 × 45 ÷ 100 = 22.05. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =49%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

22.05 is the 49% share of 45. The remaining 51% is 22.95, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 49% off an item priced $45 saves $22.05, so you pay $22.95.

Adding and taking away 49%

Increasing 45 by 49% gives 67.05 and decreasing it by 49% gives 22.95. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 49% and then lowering the result by 49% ends at 34.1955, because the second 49% is taken of a bigger number.
